christopherdowning.co.uk home reviews dead to rights: retribution alan wake alpha protocol skate 3 call of duty: black ops rock band 3 stacking stacking: the lost hobo king red dead redemption rdr: undead nightmare mafia ii portal 2 l.a. noire about browsing: / home shortlink splitting a flac file using a cue file by admin on october 26, 2016 in computing recently i found myself in possession of some music where the entire album was a single flac file. each flac file came along with a cue file (also known as a cue sheet), which simply defines when, in seconds from the start, each individual track begins. this is fine for archival purposes, when you just want a backup of an existing cd, but it makes it awkward if you just want to listen to a single song off an album. luckily, the ubuntu repositories contain some tools that make splitting the file into individual tracks incredibly simple. continue reading → share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink steam comes to linux by admin on april 7, 2013 in computing , games no, not vaporised water, i mean the games distribution platform. the linux version has been in beta for a while, but was officially released back on valentine’s day. i’ve been using my free time to play test some of the games available, which explains the gap between then and me posting this. continue reading → share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink happy new year by admin on january 1, 2013 in games , random musings i’ve been a bit light on new posts lately, but that’s been because i’ve had a stack of new games to play through. the pre-christmas period seemed to have a lot more good deals on games than usual, especially the daily deals on xbox live, from which i’ve bought joe danger 2, spelunky, trials evolution and all five episodes of the walking dead. so it must be said my “stack” of games is mainly virtual, so is more a few extra entries on a list somewhere. i did get some retail games too though; a few days before christmas, game had far cry 3 for a mere £22.49, a great price considering it had only been out for a few weeks. i really recommend it, though i must admit i was left a bit disappointed by the ending. i also bought the batman: arkham city game of the year edition, and that was pretty good too, though i think i preferred arkham asylum. i hope to write a bit more in-depth about some of these games if i get the chance, but in the meantime, happy new year! share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink theme hospital by admin on october 31, 2012 in games these last few days i’ve been playing theme hospital on ubuntu, via the corsixth project . the project aims to recreate the game’s engine so it works on modern pcs (the original game was released over 15 years ago), and at the moment is only at version 0.10, so there are still some bugs and some features are missing. to play it you need a copy of the original game’s data files, which i copied off my original cd-rom, and i also had to follow the instructions here to compile from the source, as the pre-compiled .deb file didn’t seem to work for me. continue reading → share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink olympics by admin on september 5, 2012 in random musings i’m a few weeks late on this, but, at the risk of sounding like that guy on the fast show , wasn’t the olympics brilliant? from the first day to the last, i spent way longer than i want to admit watching the various events (which is one of the reasons for my lack of posts). i was helped by the excellent bbc coverage, which, because i’m lucky enough to have sky hd, gave me the choice of 24 live hd channels. i was often flicking between several of them, to follow the progress of the british athletes in action at the given moment. i think i’m right in saying i watched every one of team gb’s 29 gold medals being won, but i may be wrong. either way, it was great to watch. i think i suffered from a bit of post-olympics depression when it was over, everyday had felt like a momentous occasion, it was hard to go back to normal where medals weren’t being handed out and world records weren’t being broken. being a big cricket fan though, the post-olympics blues wasn’t helped by england losing their number one ranking in test match cricket. they were beaten 2-0 by south africa in a three match series, a scoreline which i think is a little unfair to england. they were routed in the first match, but the other two were very close; i’d have fancied their chances of winning the second if less time were taken out of the game by the weather, and i don’t think they’d have lost the third if they could have played for a draw. england have managed to keep the number one one-day ranking though, so that’s some consolation. share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink goodbye june by admin on june 30, 2012 in random musings june seems to have absolutely flown by. so i haven’t had the time to write one of my usual insightful posts. usually i would blame this on spending too long playing a new game, but this month i blame it on all the sport that’s been on, i’ve been watching euro 2012, cricket, and, over this last week, wimbledon too. and with more cricket, the tour de france, and the olympics coming up soon, the next couple of months are going to be just as bad! the football is the first thing i’ve been able to watch live in hd, via a new tv with built-in freeview hd. it looks pretty good! the tv has a good standard definition picture, but switching between the sd and hd channels the difference is clear, as you’d expect. wimbledon has looked good in hd too, and i’m definitely looking forward to the olympics. there’s an extra red button hd channel being added for that too. if the recent somewhat crazy weather continues, watching it at home will probably be better than being there! share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink what i’ve been playing recently by admin on may 31, 2012 in games due to there being cricket on over the last couple of weeks, and with me having other distractions too, i haven’t had time to make any posts recently. so i thought i’d just do a quick one to recommend a couple of games i’ve been playing, during the time when i should have been writing more posts. somewhat strangely for me, i actually bought them both at full price, rather than waiting a while for the price to drop as i usually do. continue reading → share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink joe danger special edition review by admin on april 27, 2012 in games i’d played the demo of joe danger special edition when it came out last december, and i enjoyed it. but being the frugal type, and not being particularly desperate for a new game to play, i decided to wait until it was on offer to purchase it. that time came a few weeks ago when it was reduced to half price (600 microsoft points) as a deal of the week, and i duly snapped it up. the original joe danger was only on the playstation network, but the special edition has extra content just for xbox, although the cynic in me says that that is mainly to get around exclusivity agreements. still more is good, and the game does offer a lot of content. continue reading → share this on: mixx delicious digg facebook twitter shortlink long time, no posts by admin on march 22, 2012 in random musings i haven’t had a new post for a while, which is an excuse to write a new post. what have i been doing? well, i had a job interview. i didn’t get it though. which is a shame, that would have been a good excuse for not posting anything new. i also finally got round to playing assassin’s creed: brotherhood. it was pretty good. i probably won’t bother writing one of my reviews for it though, as it’s been out for 18 months or so now and it’s only about £10, so i think anyone who’s going to buy it probably already has. while i may not have had good news on the job front, i have had a few ideas for a bit o
